Traditionally most people get their wisdom teeth removed as they enter early adulthood due to lack of space, especially in the lower jaw. In an earlier blog we gave some helpful information with regards to wisdom teeth care, and what to look out for when making a decision whether your wisdom teeth require removal.
In this blog we discuss what the impact IMDO jaw surgery has on the eruption (emerging) of your wisdom teeth.
Why do most people not have room for their lower wisdom teeth?
Individuals who develop impacted wisdom teeth generally have a small lower jaw. Hence the lack of space for the wisdom teeth to erupt as fully functioning teeth.
IMDO increases the size of the lower jaw
Profilo Surgical’s Dr Paul Coceangic has developed a treatment called IMDO which involves a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery to treat the small lower jaw.
The result is an enlarged jaw that accommodates all teeth, including wisdom teeth.
If a young adult's wisdom teeth are mildly impacted or not yet fully formed then there is a very good chance that these wisdom teeth will fully erupt into the mouth and become functioning teeth.
However, If your child undergoes IMDO it does not necessarily mean that they will not require extraction of wisdom teeth. If the impaction of their wisdom teeth was severe prior to surgery the teeth may not be able to spontaneously upright themselves after the IMDO jaw surgery procedure.
Who cares if wisdom teeth need extraction?
If all wisdom teeth erupt and are functioning in conjunction with the opposing wisdom teeth then these teeth make as much of a contribution to eating as any of the other teeth present.
IMDO Jaw Surgery has benefits in addition to creating space for healthy wisdom teeth. The enlargement of a small jaw can increase the airway space enabling better sleep-state breathing and reducing effects such as snoring and sleep apnoea.
Wisdom tooth extraction is an invasive surgical procedure. There are risks associated with extracting wisdom teeth. There are also risks associated with leaving impacted wisdom teeth in place without attention.
For your child to be able to retain their wisdom teeth and avoid their surgical removal down the track, IMDO is the ideal intervention. We believe in giving your child every opportunity in respect to time to allow their wisdom teeth to come through.

'Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.'
